Interreg VI news
The asynchronous three-phase motor is by far the most widely used electric motor type in the world. About 65 to 70 percent of the annual production of electric motors is carried out as asynchronous three-phase motor. These motors are being built up to a capacity of 2 MW. Due to their inherent robustness, these engines form the backbone of the motorization of industrial plants. The high availability of drive power is essential for the productivity of many systems. Often such motors are used together with frequency converters for speed control and precise control.
In practical use of these motors, e.g. for crane applications in harbours, there are various problems which affect the availability of the engines as well as warranty aspects: shaft bearing wear, burn through, incorrect operation of speed and torque and electrical supply during voltage peaks.
An intelligent engine could detect impending problems and then inform the user. In this project, rotor measuring technology will be developed for an intelligent motor. This technology addresses a billion market. A group of associate partners, led by Philips Innovation Services, will bring in specific terms from different customer groups into the project. Philips Innovation Services will coordinate the necessary construction techniques for cost-effective and reliable rotor measurement.
