With the operation of a Bürgerbuss between Denekamp (NL) and Nordhorn (D) a gap in the cross-border public transport in the border area county Bentheim – Provincie Overijssel was closed. For the implementation of the project, a cross-border association structure was created in order to be able to permanently organize the route operation with volunteers. The project’s goal of increasing the number of passengers to 500-600 passengers per month by the end of the project was achieved in March 2019 with 502 passengers. Overall, the barrier has permanently reduced or eliminated the barrier effect of cross-border public transport. In addition, through the use of German and Dutch volunteer drivers, a contribution to better understanding and mutual coexistence in the border area was achieved.
