E-bus 2020: In Motion Charging

Produktinnovationen für Trolley-Batteriebusse.

In the “E-Bus 2020” project an 18m battery-trolley bus will be developed and optimized regarding energy efficiency to the demands of a battery bus in fleet operation. The existing overhead network is established as charging infrastructure. The batteries are charged in motion: “In Motion Charging” (IMC), during line operation, long charging times at terminus are not necessary. A high availability and productivity of buses and bus drivers is guaranteed. The operation in battery mode enables the extension of existing lines or a replacement of diesel or gas buses with a partial track under overhead wires.

The IMC trolleybuses requires the optimization of products for energy supply and energy management so that the charging infrastructure is optimal utilized. The developed buses will serve as test laboratory, the recorded data will be analyzed by the HAN University and used as basis for further developments.

The objectives set by the EU for the reduction of polluting emissions can only be achieved by changing a major part of a bus-fleet in public transport, which is possible with the technology developed in this project. Worldwide 303 Cities with existing trolley networks and a lot more with rail infrastructure are potential customers for instant utilization. Electric mobility will increase energy consumption in cities. Therefore, the expansion of the energy Network is necessary. In this project the overhead network will be extended as smart grid. Specifically charging stations equipped with batteries for E cars will be developed and connected to the overhead wires, resulting in a further spin-off. The batteries store brake – or solar energy, thus the available energy will be used more efficiently.

In addition to public transport, the concept of charging can be used also for other transport segments. As “Launching Customer” the local governments of Arnhem and Renkum offer a platform to test the company cross-cutting technologies.
