Biogas is generally seen as a sustainable source of energy for the future – in Germany, for example, it is responsible for almost 5% of total electricity production. But the biogas market seems to have come to a standstill.

In Germany, there are mainly relatively old plants that are not equipped with the latest technology and have therefore lost their economic viability. In the Netherlands, the biogas market has been growing only to a very limited extent in recent years. It often seems impossible to create business cases for the operation of new fermentation plants.

The project Groene Kaskade intends to jointly strengthen the bio-economy in the Dutch-German border area. To this end, all input and output streams that are part of the biogas value chain will be better exploited. Within the project, 11 work packages and one supporting work package will work on the improvement of the whole value chain.

A concrete example is the biogas filling station (“Refuelling at the farmer’s premises”), where as a pilot project a refuelling system for green gas will be installed directly on the farm.
