Advances in information technology – especially in the field of digitalisation, data analysis and artificial intelligence (AI) – are opening up new opportunities for industrial production, intelligent products, services and information systems for trade: large amounts of information about machines, orders, customer usage habits, etc. can be collected at low cost and in great detail, automatically processed and analysed by AI in a self-organised manner.
Further on, AI can be used by machines (so-called machine learning) to independently develop measures as proposals for action. This creates great opportunities for the development of innovative products, services and data-based business models based on them.
At the same time, it must not be overlooked that a technology as profound as AI, which may also be used in sensitive areas of life, must be embedded ethically, legally, culturally and institutionally so that basic social values and individual fundamental rights are protected fundamental social values and individual rights are safeguarded and the technology serves society and people. This is because this technology will in part fundamentally change the way people work.
The aim of AI-AGIL is to improve the conditions for SMEs to develop AI and innovative business areas based on it.
As an example, the Hanzehoogschool Groningen and the Institute for Dual Study Programmes of the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, Campus Lingen, will demonstrate possibilities of AI for six SMEs in the border region in order to work out new forms of work and business models with the companies that respect basic social values. Advice will be given to 10 other businesses in the border region on the possibilities of using AI. This project prepares a larger project for the roll-out of AI for SMEs in the border region.
