Sun and wind sometimes produce too much or too little electricity. As a result, energy supply and demand are out of balance. The innovative pilots developed between 2016 and 2020 within Power to Flex by cooperation between companies, universities and the public sector from the Northern Netherlands and Northern Germany, facilitate the storage of sustainable energy.

The energy storage took the form of hydrogen gas, heat, electricity and biogas and was aimed at both small scale (households) and medium scale (businesses and blocks of flats and mobility). The pilots developed include amongst others a smart-buffering hydrogen filling station, a smart energy container, a digester based on kitchen waste and a state-of-the-art electrolyser.
