Interreg

From 2015 to 2019, the INTERREG VA project “Bioeconomy in the Non Food Sector” developed new bio-based materials that contribute to a sustainable economy, conserve resources and help to reduce CO2. Under the leadership of the Ems Dollart Region (EDR), scientists and entrepreneurs worked together across borders. A total of 7.7 million euros was invested, of which 3.8 million euros came from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). In addition to the predefined “defined projects”, companies also had the opportunity to participate with innovative ideas in “open projects”. This resulted in various product and process innovations, such as a bike path made of biocomposites, a bio-based Tiny House, a compostable tying yarn for tomato growing, bio-based traffic signs, ingredients from Tagetes, a biological seed coating and yarns from algae for textiles.
The topics are further pursued in the INTERREG VA project “Bioeconomy – Green Chemistry”, where the focus is even more on ingredients from plants and fats for chemical applications and the establishment of production chains for the use of wetland plants.
